Syba SY-NBK68002 Silent Giant 7-Inch Fan Laptop / Notebook Cooling Pad

The idea of the large fan sounds great however the bottom of the fan is totally open. If you set your laptop on your lap, the fan will not spin. There is nothing in the front of the fan to keep your laptop from sliding off the fan. The fan blades are very flimbsy. One of the fan blades actually broke when it hit my finger. Price point is great – product is not good.

I bought this for my Netbook (since the little thing get very hot). This cooling pad was a great deal. The price is stupid and the pad works great. No name brand here, just a good product.

I bought this cooler pad on 11/22/09, and it worked fine as long as it was on a flat surface (the fan is open on the bottom) for a few weeks. Just today, on 12/31/09, one of the fan blades broke off for no apparent reason. Later in the evening, another one broke off. I guess you get what you pay for. This cooling pad is great if you don’t need it to last very long.

Pros:
Thermal events on my laptop have stopped all together when being used normally.
The blue lighting is pretty cool, and not overpowering.
It plugs into the USB, making things simple.
There is no setup software or drivers needed.
Even now that I have been using it heavily for a few months, I still cannot hear the fan in action.
The fan being so nice and wide means a wide area of ventilation.
The fan stops and does not hurt if you manage to stick your finger in it.
Foam pads on top and bottom mean that your laptop is not sliding all over.
It is built in a manner that dust collection is not an issue.
Cons:
The bottom is open, so if you set it directly on your lap (or other soft surface), the fan will press against your leg instead of spinning. You must use a hard surface, even if it just a large book.
When running huge and heavy programs, it is not efficient enough to always keep up. Thermal events may still occur.
The package says the stand is adjustable, but it is not. It is at a fixed height, although the height seems to be good.
If you do not like the little sticker on the front, it is next to impossible to remove.
Being made of plastic, it does not have much heat sync action. It depends solely on ventilation.
There is no on/off switch, although unplugging a USB from a laptop is not a difficult thing.
Overall:
This is a pretty good little item considering the price range. If you use your laptop for surfing the net or other every day programs, then this is a decent choice. It is quiet and gets the job done at a economic price. However, if you tend to run heavy programs that really produce the heat, you may want to look for something a little meatier.

I have been looking for a fan to cool down my overheating Direct TV HR20 HD DVR. It’s in a glass case and does not have enough air moving through it to keep it cool. I tried leaving the doors cracked open but it made very little difference and looks like crap. This amazing little fan unit drops the temp from 129 degrees to 110 degrees just by simply sitting it on top of my DVR and plugging it conveniently into one of the the USB ports that don’t actually do anything on this DVR. So if you are experiencing video breakup or audio drop outs then check your receiver’s internal temp by going to the menu > Setup > System Setup > Info & Test > More System Info. If your temp is running higher than 120 degrees you’ll start experiencing video and audio breakup. I imagine that this fan would be great for any electronics that tend to run hot when put into a case or cabinet. I highly recommend it.
