It does protect the laptop but a thin film of plastic starts to peel off within a few days where you place your fingers to open the laptop. Functional but not well made.

Haven't seen a better product yet but still doesn't deserve 5 or 4 stars. The rubber coating rubs off very easily. Within the first week in my backpack the cover looks old and well used. Now granted it does the job and my computer is perfectly protected and shows no sign of wear. Just wish this cover didn't wear so easily, its kind of annoying to have a junky looking cover after a week when it looked so beautiful out of the box. Oh well I'm happy I got it either way.

I have been using Speck shell cases for a long time. . . from my original 15. 4" macbook pro to the unibody versions of the 15. 4 and now the 17" Mac Book Pro. Speck cases are a elegant solution that provide protection for your investment and make it look great at the same time. I recently got a 17" macbook pro and the second item I ordered was this. . . . but I was a bit disappointed this time around.

First of all - this case is made to perfectly fit the Unibody styles and offers protection. The bottom of the case has vent cut outs for heat dissipation which make it perfect. The satin finish is beautiful and when the apple lights up. . it shows through with a hint of purple. . which is nice.

Why then did I give it 4 stars. . . ? simple. The 17" iteration simply does not have a SNUG fit around the WEBCAM area of the 17" Unibody. It is a bit loose and thus when you open the laptop it the speck comes up. . . it should not be this way. The others have always fit snug.

If you have a unibody or any other MAC laptop. . . I would definitely recommend a SPECK!

Wouldn't recommend this product at all. Although it seems to provide good protection, it has two major shortcomings that I have noticed. First, I noticed that the bottom piece is sagging in the middle, which drives me nuts. I believe for the asking price, you would get top quality. Second, I pulled the covers off the other day to clean underneath, as recommended by the manufacturer, only to find scuff marks on my brand new $3,000 laptop. This product did the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. Now I have a brand new computer that merely sits on my desk, hasn't been moved once, only opened and closed, but looks as though it has spent the last ten years roaming the globe.

Just arrived today and could not wait to install it. At first it seemed to fit nicely. Of course that's when its just sitting on the table. To my disappointment, every time I closed it up and picked up the whole laptop. . . . the bottom piece keeps popping out of place (towards the top left area). I realize that this is because the bottom piece bends whenever I hold the laptop on the hinge side. . . which in turn unlatches this corner. This corners small bracket don't quite latch on securely because the plastic is not stiff enough. Perhaps a got a lemon. . . or perhaps they should have made this with a stiffer plastic.

So overall, for such an expensive piece of plastic. . . they shouldn't have cut corners with the grade of material. Would I recommend? Perhaps only if you want to superglue it on to keep it in place.
